Within the coming days, I’ll return to the crimson clay hills of Georgia to collect and rejoice a whole lot of Black males who will graduate from Morehouse Faculty, the nation’s solely traditionally Black school or college devoted to serving male-identified Black college students. It is going to be an particularly momentous event – and never simply because I’ll rejoice my 30th reunion as a proud 1995 graduate.

The second issues as a result of graduates, households, school, and alumni alike shall be challenged by a compelling and critically insightful graduation deal with by Dr. Cornel West. Dr. West is one among our nation’s main public intellectuals and a scholarly activist. There may not be a greater particular person for this second than Dr. West. Together with his longstanding commitments to social evaluation, historic understanding, cultural criticism, political engagement, and progressive religion, West affords each a private and public narrative of human maturation that my younger, newly minted brothers will want for this crucial second in our world.

After I was at Morehouse, a number of the most essential books I learn weren’t books for courses, however books I learn by myself. The authors that gripped me included poets and Black arts students Haki Madhabuti and the late Nikki Giovanni, theologian the late James Cone, Black feminist the late bell hooks, esteemed authorized scholar and civil rights activist the late Derrick Bell, and maybe most significantly, Dr. Cornel West.

I recall denying one other Morehouse pupil their copy of a required course textual content by shopping for Race Issues within the campus bookstore. As a freshman, I eagerly learn this ebook by the Union Theological Seminary professor, then on his method to Harvard College. My thoughts, coronary heart and vocabulary all expanded as West grappled with a set of concepts, social practices, and the historic unfolding of the intractable hegemonic circumstances of political subjugation, financial exploitation, ethical degradation, and cultural dehumanization, which produced nihilistic circumstances of lovelessness, meaninglessness and hopelessness for therefore many Black individuals – then and now.

Cornel West visited Morehouse in 1992, and he was honored by the school. He signed my ebook, “Keep robust within the wrestle, pricey brother!” These phrases compelled me to years of examine, service, and wrestle at Morehouse. West’s ebook framed for me a lifetime of the thoughts, dedicated to being a Black prophetic Christian mental rooted in grassroots actions, solidarity with different marginalized individuals, and deep and broad democratic commitments to serve, empower, and allow all to thrive with human dignity and chance. Whereas Race Issues could also be West’s best-known ebook, one among his earliest, Prophesy Deliverance! An Afro-American Revolutionary Christianity may be his most essential and most compelling for this second.

A 12 months in the past, I brazenly criticized my beloved alma mater for inviting then-sitting President Joseph R. Biden to ship the graduation deal with and to obtain an honorary diploma.

In an open letter to school, asking them to vote to disclaim the president an honorary diploma, I stated, “After I studied at and graduated from Morehouse Faculty in 1995, I used to be deeply formed by the lives of former President Benjamin Elijah Mays, and alums Rev. Dr. Howard Thurman and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Whereas Morehouse monumentalizes these individuals on campus, there is no such thing as a higher monument to their lives at this second than the ethical braveness to problem a sitting United States president.” These phrases true then are very true now that Donald Trump has been re-elected president.

Cornel West has been one of the crucial constant and compelling voices highlighting America’s ongoing complicity within the triple evils Dr. King recognized as racism, militarism, and hypercapitalism. Dr. West, in his personal 2024 bid for the presidency, engaged in a marketing campaign of reality, justice, and love. He boldly condemned the killing and capturing of a whole lot of Israeli residents by Hamas, and america’ unilateral arming of Israel to prosecute a warfare beset with atrocities of killing tens of 1000’s of Palestinian non-combatants, and displacing and ravenous a whole lot of 1000’s of others.

West predicted that centrist civility and pandering to the center class wouldn’t shield us from the rise of jingoistic, xenophobic, anti-Black financial oligarchy and state violence at residence and overseas. Greater than 40 years in the past in Prophesy Deliverance! West instructed Black intellectuals and particularly Christian theologians that if inclusion of the Black middle-class right into a structurally racist capitalist financial system and a racially constrained democracy was all we have been in search of, we wanted to way back cease calling our coaching, main, serving, and learning–liberation.

After listening to from the apex of American energy a 12 months in the past and seeing simply how damaging that show of energy has been, Morehouse Males would do nicely to take heed to an natural mental from the streets of Sacramento, California, and the pews of the Black Baptist church, who is aware of that success with out sacrifice, cash with out morals, mind with out integrity and energy over with out empowering all might make these newly minted Morehouse Males mighty, however unfit of our so-called mystique.

Although Dr. West isn’t a Morehouse Man, like Dr. Mays, he has indelibly formed Morehouse Males. He has taught, mentored, or influenced intellectuals just like the esteemed Morehouse trustee and Black Research and Faith scholar Dr. Eddie Glaude, and Harvard Divinity College scholar Dr. Terrence Johnson.

A bevy of Morehouse preachers have been impacted by his years of instructing at Union, Harvard and Princeton, together with such essential prophetic voices as Morehouse trustee and pastor of Mt. Ennon Baptist Church of Maryland, Rev. Dr. Delman Coates, pastor of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio, Rev. Dr. Jawanza Colvin, pastor of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church of New York Metropolis, Rev. Dr. Kevin Johnson, and pastor of the sanctuary of the civil rights motion, the Ebenezer Baptist Church of Atlanta, U.S. Senator, Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock.

Past Morehouse, one solely must recall 2014 when Michael Brown lay lifeless within the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, killed by a racist rogue cop, as clergy and activists descended. New leaders emerged referred to as #BlackLivesMatter: Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi, Michael McBride, Traci Blackmon, Starsky Wilson, and Charlene Carruthers, amongst many others. And early on, locking arms in solidarity, however not in search of the highlight was Dr. Cornel West.

Now, as an elder, senior scholar, veteran activist, and a long time lengthy devoted progressive Christian, this humble brother might help let the voice of the struggling, marginalized, locked up, not noted, and least of those converse – in order that in a brand new era of Morehouse Males, we will perceive our mystique stays in an ethical custom, ever increasing and evolving, difficult us to develop deep roots, and produce bountiful fruit of justice, love and fairness.

Dr. Marlon Millner is a visiting assistant professor of Faith and African American Research at Wesleyan College, and a 1995 graduate of Morehouse Faculty.
