When a number of empowered Black girls come collectively, a room takes on a sure power. It crackles with the heat and knowledge of sisterhood and fellowship.
That was the power on the unique tastemakers’ dinner held Might 13 at Tatiana, Chef Kwame Onwuachi’s Caribbean fusion hotspot in New York Metropolis. Taraji P. Henson, Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor and a room filled with influential Black girls gathered over goat curry patties, sipped Henson’s Seven Daughters Moscato and iBest Wines, and shared significant dialog, culminating in an unique first have a look at the trailer for Tyler Perry’s upcoming Netflix movie, Straw.
Henson stars as a single mom whose world unravels as a day goes from dangerous to worse to catastrophic whereas she’s struggling to take care of her sick daughter. Pushed to the brink, she does the unthinkable — armed with a gun, she walks into her native financial institution department and calls for cash. It’s a determined selection in a world that appears detached to her existence, which has led her to this final straw of potentialities.
Henson shared with friends how she felt about her onscreen persona. “It is extremely essential to have a sister circle. On this movie, [my character] has nobody, so my coronary heart bled for her.”
Co-star Shepherd exclaimed, “There’s one thing about being in a room full of our melanin and you actually really feel the ancestral vibes.” Different stars supporting the forged have been Michelle Buteau, Niecy Nash-Betts, Rolanda Watts, Bevy Smith and Gayle King.
The evening ended with heat hugs, numbers exchanged and one epic group pic. It was a reminder that when all appears to be towards us, turning to our tribe is the saving grace that may hold us grounded.
