Film Evaluate: Blame It On Rio (1984)

Style: Romantic Farce

Director: Stanley Donen

Starring: Michael Caine, Joseph Bologna, Michelle Johnson, Demi Moore, Valerie Harper
Working Time: 100 minutes

Synopsis: With their marriage wobbling, Matthew and Karen (Michael Caine and Valerie Harper) go on separate holidays. Matthew heads to Rio together with his teenaged daughter Nikki (Demi Moore), his greatest pal Victor (Joseph Bologna), who’s going via a divorce, and Victor’s daughter Jennifer (Michelle Johnson). As soon as in Rio, 43-year-old Matthew and 18-year-old Jennifer develop a mutual attraction and embark on an affair. Jennifer is thrilled that she has seduced an older man, however Matthew is horrified that he’s sleeping together with his buddy’s daughter.

What Works Nicely: Michael Caine manages to boost his efficiency above the fabric, and rescues a number of laughs. The Brazilian surroundings, avenue life, and tradition are captured with palpable vibrancy.

What Does Not Work As Nicely: The carnage of extreme nudity, obsession with ogling, and aggressive seduction can’t conceal the failings of a limp script. As soon as Matthew and Jennifer set off their illicit liaison, momentum grinds to a halt, with inadequate plot factors to occupy the remaining hour. Aside from Caine, the performances vary from over-acting (Bologna) to non-acting (Johnson and Moore). Including to the icky premise is the stench of each grownup character behaving as badly as doable, pushed by hormones and with no regard for harm prompted to friendships or long-term relationships.

Key Quote:

Matthew: Final evening by no means occurred.

Jennifer: I do know. I used to be there when it did not.
