ANDERSON — After years of not tolling out the time, a 140-year-old historic clock has been restored on the Madison County courthouse.
The clock and bell occupying the primary tower on the Madison County Authorities Middle has been repaired by the Verdin Firm of Ohio. The price of the contract is $36,280.
The restore allows the clock to strike on the half-hour after the corporate put in new electronics.
The bell was initially put in when the primary courthouse was in-built Anderson in 1885.
“There may be loads of historical past to the bell,” Madison County Historian Steve Jackson stated beforehand. “Not solely did the bell strike the hour when it was first put in, it pealed each time there was a fireplace in Anderson to alert the volunteer firefighters.”
James Abraham stated when the courthouse was demolished within the early Seventies, the bell was positioned on a pedestal within the foyer of the constructing.
“Contributions have been solicited from native residents to put the bell and a clock within the south tower,” he beforehand stated. “The title of each donor was included on a plaque on the tower when the bell was restored in 1985.
“On the time, each native newspapers supported the set up of the bell on the courthouse tower,” he stated.
Abraham stated the commissioners on the time permitted the set up of the bell and the clock.
The clock has faces on the east, west and south sides of the courthouse.
“When the bell was within the foyer of the courthouse, each every so often, I might take a coin and make the bell toll,” Abraham stated.
“I’m glad that the bell and clock are being repaired,” he stated. “It’s a recognition of all of the individuals who made a contribution to have the bell put in within the tower.”
