Synopsis: In New York Metropolis, skilled mistress Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) runs out of other-women’s-husbands keen to fund her way of life. She relocates to Amalfi in Italy, and joins a rich and gossipy English group together with newlyweds Meg and Robert Windermere (Scarlett Johansson and Mark Umbers). The dashing Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore) intends to seduce Meg, and finds a gap when Mrs. Erlynne occupies Robert’s consideration. In the meantime, the exceptionally wealthy and many-times-divorced Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) believes he can lastly discover happiness with Mrs. Erlynne.
What Works Effectively: This adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s 1892 play Girl Windermere’s Fan advantages from picturesque Italian areas occupied by the idle wealthy, and engaging Nineteen Thirties-era units, costumes, hairstyles, and make-up. Tom Wilkinson as Tuppy delivers a wistful efficiency as a soft-at-heart man who has all the pieces besides a worthy life companion. Director Mike Barker hustles occasions alongside at a brisk tempo, and the central twist provides zest.
What Does Not Work As Effectively: The plot solely works with a base degree of across-the-board obtuse behaviour. Neither Helen Hunt nor Scarlett Johansson seem absolutely comfy of their roles, and aside from Wilkinson, the opposite male actors mechanically undergo the motions. Delivered by a hovering Greek refrain of secondary gossipers, the script is over-burdened with Wilde’s witticisms, with most touchdown as self-satisfied litter.
