Film Overview: Fist Of Fury (1972)

Style: Martial Arts Motion

Director: Lo Wei

Starring: Bruce Lee

Working Time: 102 minutes

Synopsis: Martial arts professional Chen (Bruce Lee) returns to his Shanghai coaching college to suggest marriage to fellow-student Yuan. He’s surprised to study that their beloved instructor has simply died. A rival Japanese college led by Suzuki might have been behind the dying, and Suzuki’s brokers proceed to insult Chinese language tradition and threaten to shut-down Chen’s college. He defends his satisfaction by defeating a number of Japanese college opponents in battle, resulting in reprisal assaults and spiraling violence.

What Works Nicely: The plot particulars are incidental. The tradition conflict and revenge themes are a pretext for a sequence of well-choreographed and expertly staged battle scenes fueled by hatred, propelled by nationalism, and dripping with depth. Sluggish movement sequences function exclamation marks, and Bruce Lee’s chiseled physique and perpetually dour presence is a darkish supply of coiled anger.

What Does Not Work As Nicely: Chen’s arc is restricted to the rising realization that violence begets violence and that his mates can turn into victims. In any other case, character depth is non-existent, and the quiet intervals expose rudimentary feelings, fundamental manufacturing values, and restricted appearing expertise.

Key Quote:

Chen (forcing his opponents to eat an insulting scroll): Eat. This time you are consuming paper. The following time it may be glass.
