Film Assessment: Three Amigos! (1986)

Synopsis: In 1916, Fortunate, Dusty, and Ned (Steve Martin, Chevy Chase, and Martin Brief) are none-too-bright Hollywood stars who painting the dashing Three Amigos in a collection of western films. Once they demand extra pay, their producer (Joe Mategna) fires them. The Amigos reply to a telegram from Mexican villager Carmen (Patrice Martinez), believing they’re placing on a present in return for an look price. In actual fact Carmen wants the Amigos to rid her village of Santa Poco from dastardly villain El Guapo and his ruthless males.

What Works Effectively: Director John Landis finds some pleasure when he leans into The Magnificent Seven ethos and Spaghetti Western aesthetics. The Randy Newman songs glorify campiness, and seize the comedy spirit higher than the script.

What Does Not Work As Effectively: A lot of the jokes are depending on exceptionally dim-witted behaviour, and so fairly predictably fall flat for anybody over the age of 12. Martin, Brief, and Chase share the screentime however hardly ever get alternatives to shine, with Chase seemingly probably the most disinterested. The native Mexican characters are imprisoned inside stereotypical classifications: easy villagers, lustful bandits, and sweaty cantina occupants.
