Synopsis: In Massachusetts of the Nineteen Sixties, 24 year-old Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) works at a males’s jail. Nonetheless single, she daydreams about sexual encounters, whereas at dwelling she cares for her perpetually drunk father Jim (Shea Whigham), a retired police captain. When glamorous psychologist Rebecca (Anne Hathaway) joins the jail workers, a mutual attraction develops between the 2 girls, they usually each become involved within the case of a prisoner who brutally murdered his father.
What Works Nicely: The difference of Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel carries the promise of a wallflower’s imminent awakening. Regardless of a poorly dealt with and frazzled change in narrative tone, the 2 lead actresses stay dedicated to their roles. Thomasin McKenzie conveys burgeoning sexual confusion and curiosity clashing with home frustrations, and whereas Anne Hathaway oversells the liberated lady shtick, she by no means shies away from filling the display with character.
What Does Not Work As Nicely: What seems to be a clean glide in the direction of a simple-enough romance takes a bizarre flip within the closing act and by no means recovers. The backstory of a younger man who murdered his father immediately and undeservedly takes centre stage, and all too late to elucidate the sudden detours in key character behaviours. The intricate investments in Eileen and Rebecca as advanced girls value realizing are unceremoniously discarded.
